PCB terminals and connectors
Before they are launched on the market, electronic components and devices are checked for safety. The leading global organisations for the certification of product safety are Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).There are substantial differences between both standards, which makes global product approval more difficult. In general, the requirements for UL are stricter than those of the IEC. So when developing devices for the global market, the aim is therefore to consider the requirements of the UL standards as priority.
Norms and standards worldwide
The solutions offered by Weidmüller are globally applicable concepts. They satisfy the demand for increasing density and complexity and at the same time fulfil diverse regulations and requirements.
Weidmüller takes into consideration the testing and application standards from the following organisations: IEC, UL/CSA, VDE, EN
International organisation for standardisation in electrical engineering and electronicsThe IEC describes the safety requirements of a device used in the field. The technical details for the design implementation of the safety requirements are the responsibility of the manufacturer.
Leading, independent American organisation which tests and certifies products with respect to their safety
UL defines stricter approval criteria based on the tougher product liability laws in the USA. These approval criteria must be fulfilled by all products on the one hand and all process steps on the other. This also applies to product design, production, application, mounting and extends as far as operation. The UL standard distinguishes between listed devices and registered components. So a component, such as a PCB terminal, is the smallest product unit and, unlike a device, is not given a UL listing, but is registered.
UL places different demands on components and devices. Device connectivity components are subject to standard UL 1059, which is the accepted safety standard for terminal blocks and also applies to modular terminal blocks and plug-in connectors. Both are recognised as individual components in accordance with UL 1059. In the final application, the components are then assessed and approved in conjunction with a device.
CSA Group develops and maintains standards for the Canadian market. CSA C22.2 No. 158 is essentially identical with UL 1059.
To simplify the certification for companies, the organisations CSA and UL signed a Memorandum of Understanding. For you and us this means: Tests, inspections and certificates in accordance with the US standard are mutually recognised. If the test is performed according to CSA by the American UL, this is described as a cURus approval, whereby cURus is the test mark of the US testing authority for the US and Canadian market.
The application developer refers to an application-related UL standard and not the component standard (UL 1059).
PCB components are are approved in accordance with UL 1059 and are tested without PCB or application environment - applications are can be approved in accordance with UL 61800-5-1 (Adjustable speed electrical power drive systems) - The application developer has to refer to application-related UL standards and not to UL 1059 - Under defined conditions, UL61800-5-1 allows the use of components in 600-V applications, even though, according to UL1059, the individual components are only approved for 300 V. - Weidmüller Powermate range connectors and power terminal blocks meet the specified requirements and may be used in applications for 600 V in accordance with UL 61800-5-1.
