Providing surveillance cameras with a stable voltage and data supply
“We help to assemble reliable camera systems by using our UPS control unit to ensure power is supplied continuously. Together with the associated battery module and the supporting power supply, this component forms a complete DC UPS system,” says Product Manager Klaus Schürmann, explaining Weidmüller's solution approach. “In the event of a power failure – in other words, if the DC input voltage drops – operations switch to battery mode without any delay. Once the power supply is restored, the integrated charger fully recharges the battery, so that a camera system is immediately prepared for any further voltage drops.”
Industrial Power over Ethernet switches are the obvious choice when it comes to establishing an ideal connection to the data network for the camera system. This eliminates the need for complex cabling, as the data and current intended for the networked cameras can be transferred on a single, standard line. Given that data networks are especially sensitive to electrical interferences, Weidmüller recently rounded off the products and services it offers, by including Ethernet surge protectors, designed especially for use in Power over Ethernet applications. This creates a complete solution package for providing surveillance cameras with a stable voltage and data supply.
A fail-safe concept for camera systems in Singapore
Home to more than 5 million inhabitants, Singapore is a megacity with a gigantic infrastructure and corresponding requirements with respect to reliable supply and smooth traffic engineering. Among other products, surveillance systems from Singapore-based firm, Oneberry Technologies, provide the scrutiny necessary for this. Cameras which evaluate and save the high-resolution images internally, using integrated high-performance computers, form an integral part of the solutions designed for the city state. To achieve zero downtime, the cameras must be provided with an uninterruptible power supply. Otherwise, this wouldn't just result in downtimes due to voltage drops and defective IT devices; there would also be the risk of additional time losses caused by the cameras' integrated computers rebooting.

“Power failures or voltage fluctuations can happen at any time. But these situations must not compromise the surveillance system's functionality at any time,” adds Weidmüller Sales Specialist John Quek, who advised Oneberry on-site in Singapore. “After analysing the existing system setup in detail using IT technology, we were quickly able to come up with an alternative concept featuring industrial-suited components.”
As well as assembling a DC UPS system, Weidmüller integrated Power over Ethernet switches in the concept. While supply voltages of 12, 48 or even 60 volts are common in the IT sector, the standardised 24 volt supply that industrial components are provided with guarantees a reduced level of complexity, thereby minimising operating expenses.
Ready-assembled distribution boxes for external assembly – which, for example, are now used in Singapore's traffic infrastructure – form the frame of the solution. Each distribution box can provide up to eight cameras with a reliable power and data supply via Industrial Ethernet and Power over Ethernet. In this way, a stable, industrial UPS system featuring Power over Ethernet switches has been connected to a fully co-ordinated solution – using only 24 V components.
