The thoroughly tested LED lamps withstand even the extreme operating requirements in the rotor hub
The optimal aerodynamic positioning of the rotor blades is one of the most important functions in a wind turbine station. It is essential for maximising the power that can be generated with the system. The task of adjusting the rotor blades falls to the pitch system which is built into the rotor hub. To ensure troublefree operation of wind turbines, the service technicians must be as comfortable as possible during maintenance work and checks while working on the systems in the rotor hub. When working on the system it is first stopped and locked. The wind turbine manufacturer Senvion brings light to the darkness in its rotor hubs using Weidmüller’s lighting solution, FieldPower® LED, which has been specially designed for use in the wind industry.
“Service technicians need reliable lighting in the rotor hub for their periodic checks or for maintenance work. For our wind turbines therefore, we install two or three lights onto the pitch boxes, since comfortable vision is a basic requirement for safety and proper work in the hub,” explained Karsten Brandt from Senvion.
Weidmüller’s lighting solution, FieldPower® LED, was an ideal solution in this respect thanks to its impact resistant polycarbonate housing, as well as the LED technology used. Classed as fire protection category V0, with fixtures made from corrosion resistant stainless steel for offshore installations and a painted PCB for protection against condensation, the lights impressed Senvion with their high degree of resilience. Their calculated service life (MTTF), even with the high mechanical stresses, is more than 20 years. In addition, Weidmüller has combined these features with the ability for them to be used globally without restrictions.
Highly usable in global use
“Wind turbine systems from Senvion are used in zones with a cold climate – Canada or Alaska for example – as well as in countries with high external temperatures like Australia. Senvion offers wind
turbine systems in so-called “Cold Climate Versions” (CCV) and “Hot Climate Versions” (HCV). To minimise the number of versions of lights in use, it was important to Senvion that all system types could use the same sort of lamps,” Dirk Bauerkämper, Weidmüller’s Key Account Manager, explained. “As our FieldPower® LED lamps can be used without problems from -40 to +55 °C over years of continuous operation, we could meet this important requirement. Another advantage over gas-filled bulbs, is that even where the ambient temperature is very low, our LED solution lights at full intensity without any delay.”
International markets do not just mean different climatic zones, rather also different voltages and frequencies. For the USA with 120 V AC/60 Hz networks, Senvion had been forced to use different of lamps to those they could use in Europe with 230 V AC/50 Hz networks. Today however, thanks to its UL approval and the multivoltage input, Senvion can use the same lamp worldwide with FieldPower® LEDs. Deliveries of Senvion wind turbine systems fitted out with Weidmüller’s LED systems have already been delivered to projects in Canada. Thanks to the extensive testing and certification, Senvion are confident with using on this lighting solution.
Checked with painstaking care
Three mounting options allow the standardisation of Senvion system types. Direct mounting on a metal bracket is suitable for particularly flat designs. When mounted in this way, the LED lamps are shallower
“We were able to offer Senvion an innovative solution with FieldPower® LED and its robust light bodies which bring all the qualities needed for international use in wind turbine systems in on- and off-shore installations. The lighting solution is easily adaptable, and can be fitted as standard to all system types and sizes. In any case, service and maintenance personnel can count on a safe, functioning lighting system. An external UPS ensures lighting even in the event of a power outage,” Bauerkämper said when summarising the advantages for his customers. “Thanks to their energy efficiency, long service life and their meeting DIN standard EN 50308 for wind turbine systems in terms of their light values of up to 50 lux, the FieldPower® LED is tailor-made for use in the wind power industry. When used in the rotor hub, it ensures that you can see well and work safely.”
