“Wherever you look, it’s clear that the trend towards renewable energies is showing no signs of slowing down. We at Weidmüller welcome and support this development. Despite the fact that as a German company we’ve been aware of this issue for several years now, from a global perspective the market is still at a relatively early stage in its development,” explains Dirk van Vinckenroye, Divisional Head of Industry Automation & Solutions at Weidmüller.
New markets can sometimes spring up very quickly in the field of renewable energies. These are mostly as a result of temporarily introduced attractive supply conditions, though they may also be triggered by events such as the Fukushima reactor disaster. In Japan, this event brought about rapid market growth, which Weidmüller was able to exploit immediately thanks to its extensive experience in other markets. Weidmüller is now a market leader in Japan amongst the international players in the field of photovoltaics.
“For us, the current rapid phase of development means that we are forging new paths together with our customers around the world, and making a long-term contribution to renewable energy, which is something that both excites and drives us,” van Vinckenroye continues. “Having been involved from the very start, we are extremely well-positioned for this challenge.”
For Weidmüller, the key to application-specific solutions lies in a global network of application centres that all interact closely with one another. In the case of renewable energies, there are central trading points at the headquarters in Detmold, Germany, and also in Spain. These centres are where requirements from all over the world come together to be met with the combined knowledge of experts in photovoltaics and wind energy, who support global projects from the initial planning stages right through to plant operation.
“Since as early as 2007, we have been developing, producing and delivering application-specific combiner boxes for photovoltaics projects from our base in Spain, with our unique selling point being our expertise
Intensive consultancy based on partnership forms the basis for customer-specific solutions
The individual design of the combiner boxes is developed in the global application centre in Barcelona – including function tests and design validation for series production
Installation is based on the highest quality standards at a global production network location
that extends right to the very heart of the application. We are familiar with almost every customer problem that may arise, and always have an appropriate response up our sleeve – or can use our experience to find one quickly,” confirms Rolf Sohrmann, Doctor of Engineering and Head of the Energy Solutions business unit. “Whether local standards, sealing requirements, extreme temperatures or other climate-related influences – there’s hardly any requirement that we’ve not come across before. We’ve already provided successful solutions in tropical and desert regions such as Honduras and Mauritania, and working on high-altitude projects, as we did in Chile, is also no problem for us.”
The central expert teams oversee all aspects of the project, from the first on-site consultancy session with local specialists to the development of the individual design and the production in accordance with the highest quality standards, right through to final delivery by the specified deadline. And this doesn’t only apply to photovoltaics solutions. In the field of wind energy too, the different requirements converge and are met according to their specific application.
“New markets mean a constant flow of new conditions, which in turn create new requirements that we need to meet. We are excited to address these new requirements, and always do so with plenty of drive,” says Sohrmann. “This enables us to act as a partner to our customers and actively help shape the energy supply of tomorrow.”
