Innovation & Benefit

  • Safe connections for a large photovoltaic project

Photovoltaic Junction Box

Initial situation

RPP Solar uses an integrated process to manufacture photovoltaic modules for a large project in Abrantes, Portugal: all the way from processing the raw materials to producing the end modules. Before selecting a suitable junction box for their photovoltaic modules, RPP Solar carried out extensive research and consultation throughout the international market.

Solution

The engineers of RPP Solar found that Weidmüller's junction box was an optimal solution for them. This innovative junction box was specially designed for the robot-based, fully-automatic manufacture of photovoltaic panels. It features an innovative design and provides flexible assembly options. Thus it can significantly simplify the process of manufacturing photovoltaic panels and enable a long-term reduction in costs.

The responsibilities from RPP Solar include all phases of producing photovoltaic modules, starting with the raw material.

  • Gaining with blanket coverage

Photovoltaic components

Initial situation

Modern climate protection goals are placing more importance on renewable and eco-friendly forms of power generation. Innovative advancements in the electrical engineering industry are needed in order to best exploit the potential of renewable energy forms and to better meet the requirements of this evolving market.

Solution

Weidmüller offers a wide line of power-saving and customised components that help increase efficiency in the photovoltaic sector. They can be used for manufacturing photovoltaic modules, for the facility installation, and for optimising the facility’s operational output.

  • High-speed with HighPower

RockStar® HighPower connector

Initial situation

Speeds like those of the Velaro® D high-speed trains from Siemens can only be reached because these trains no longer employ the motor in a locomotive. Instead the motor is positioned over the drive axes for acceleration. So the focus is no longer on just the locomotive, since the electronic systems and sub-systems are built into and distributed over the length of the entire train. A large variety of wide-area cable connections are required in order to reliably transmit signals throughout these systems.

Solution

One of these connections within the Velaro® Dis made by Weidmüller’s RockStar® HighPower connector. This product was specially developed for high-current applications involving motor power cables, eddy-current brakes and train carriage crossovers. The system is pluggable so that it is quick and easy to swap out components during maintenance work.

The Velaro® D train is based on the Velaro model – currently the world’s fastest operational high-speed train.

  • A simple plug to replace complex wiring systems

X-Plug™ wiring component

Inititial situation

In a conventional device cabinet for the secondary equipment in an ABB medium-voltage switching facility, there has been such a wide range of applications that it was not possible to use a standardized cable harness; so wiring has been a source of potential errors. Maintenance work and modifications could only be carried out with difficulty.

Solution

ABB and Weidmüller worked together to develop the X-Plug™ – a new wiring design intended for the medium-voltage switching facilities from the ZX line of ABB’s switching facilities. With X-Plug™, individual signals are routed within the plug itself. This new solution means that you no longer need to wire the individual devices to each other within the electrical cabinet. The standardised X-Plug™ plug-in connectors are all that are needed to connect components.

The X-Plug™ wiring component is used in the ABB ZX2 – a gas-insulated, medium-voltage switching facility.
