Customer-oriented solutions are important for Rolls-Royce

We were given the opportunity to ask Roland Groth, the strategic purchaser for Control Systems at Rolls-Royce AB,  a few questions.

• What exactly is the WDZ module, and what does it do in your application?

The WDZ module is a serial interface isolating converter. A converter from RS 232 to RS 485 which is used to facilitate and enable communication between diverse products. This module is used as a sub-component in the digital manoeuvring system which we deliver.

• What functions does the manoeuvring system have?

It is in charge of controlling the water jet and the propeller for all types of ships. The manoeuvring system can, for example, change the gradient of the propellers. It also can alter the motor speed, and it oversees the transition between forward and reverse motion. The manoeuvring system also monitors the fuel supply and can control the entire system according to the specifications of the motor manufacturer.

• Which custom adaptation was necessary in this case?

Normally, the signal lines on the modules are contacted with a Sub-D/D-Sub connection. Our requirement was to modify this connection with spring-connection technology. Weidmüller implemented the changes to this product according to our wishes, and to our complete satisfaction. The alteration to the standard product was necessary for several reasons: Special operation conditions are present on a ship. These conditions demand a high level of resistance to vibrations. In addition, the spring-connection technology will save us assembly time and thus money. In conclusion, the most important point: Our customers demand the spring connection.

• Which other products do you use from Weidmüller?

Rolls-Royce has had a central purchasing contract with Weidmüller Sweden for several years. So we purchase a whole lot of different products, for example terminal blocks, wire ferrules, insulation amplifiers, analog signal converters, relays and mounting rails. We are very content with this cooperation. Weidmüller delivers a wide range of products, with a quality level that meets our requirements. And Weidmüller also offers customised varieties, when these are needed. This type of close and well-developed cooperation with the supplier is very important for Rolls-Royce.
