Secure connection without cable

SAI Bluetooth modules are ideal for applications that prove difficult to reach with bus cables due to their extension needs or physical accessibility issues. Such a case is represented by the innovative assembly cell SmartBox from Comau. In a flexible way, this assembly cell mounts cylinder heads for engines. It realises different cylinder bore spacings as well as various valve centre-to-centre spacings.

Functional operations in the assembly cell, such as assembly and workpiece handling are kept separate from one another. A standard "end effector" with three axes accurately positions different assembly tools. Depending on the executing process these can be tools for lubrication, valve assembly, oil guard assembly, spring adjustment etc. Optionally, the end effector can be supplemented by a centre distance converter. In this manner, different cylinder head versions can be processed in the same plant.

The complexity of the technology involved, and in particular that of the assembly grippers, demands extensive cabling between the sensors and actuators as well as between the control inputs and outputs. Replacing these cable looms with a wireless communication system reduces not only the complexity but also the amount of maintenance work.
