Vibration-resistant signal communication for digital maneuvering systems

WDZ module as an isolating converter for serial interfaces

    Initial situation

The digital maneuvering system from Rolls-Royce Marina Division is in charge of controlling the water jet and the propeller for a variety of ships. The maneuvering system can, for example, change the gradient of the propellers. Normally, the signal lines on the individual modules are connected with a Sub-D/D-Sub connection. Rolls-Royce had a special requirement that these should be tension-clamp connections in order to guarantee a maintenance-free and vibration-resistant connection.

    Solution

According to the specific requirements from Rolls-Royce, Weidmüller developed the WDZ isolating converter for serial interfaces. The WDZ uses the tension-clamp connection system to establish safe communications between the different components within the ships maneuvering system. This made the vibration-resistant WDZ module perfect for the special operating conditions found on board a ship.
