A simple and secure connection system

The need for a secure connection using a standardized interface has grown along with the growth of industrial Ethernet and the increasing global interconnectivity of industrial and office networks. At the same time, users are demanding a simple and quick way to install all connectivity components. They are also looking for reliability and fault tolerance during operations. In response to these requirements, Weidmüller has initiated a research project focused on intelligent coding and identification of plug-in connectors.

With the use of intelligent components that identify which interface belongs to which cable, Weidmüller could provide a significant benefit when installing connectors and cables. The user merely holds a connector in the proximity of the plug-in slots on the device. A green LED then illuminates on the correct

then see exactly where the plug-in connector belongs on the device and the risk of manipulation and errors is thus minimized. Only approved plugs can be inserted and only then are they enabled for power, signal or data transmissions. Any plugging mistakes are immediately detected and signaled.

In this design concept, the cable, plug and connection information could be saved as data or files on a memory chip within the plug itself. Special-purpose consoles can then be used to detect and view the saved information (such as the corresponding cable type for the connection).

This concept of intelligent ports allows for the comprehensive electronic documentation of all active devices and passive components throughout the entire network infrastructure. This documentation system supports the troubleshooting process by quickly identifying and displaying any illegitimate components. This information can be displayed at a control centre or on a mobile device.
