Electrical connectivity and marking systems for Desiro ML

With its modular construction, Desiro ML is tailored to the particular needs of the frequently changing requirements of the regional rail network in Europe . It distinguishes itself by flexibility regarding train length, interior design and electrical variations. In order to realise the individual vehicle solutions which are made possible through the Desiro ML platform, a technical concept with innovative electrical connectivity is required.

For the electrical connections in the subsurface and above ground assemblies of the Desiro ML, the Siemens engineers used RockStar® heavy duty connectors. With their unique stainless-steel locking system and the high-quality multi-layered surface sealing, heavy duty connectors from Weidmüller are ideally suitable for the corrosive conditions of a transportation system like the regional train platform Desiro ML.

Desiro ML – the innovative regional train platform of Siemens Mobility

One part of the RockStar® family is the CSB plug-in connector (ConCept System Bus). It provides a secure and reliable connection in the MVB (Multifunctional Vehicle Bus) which is used for communication transmission in the passenger information system of Desiro ML. A special characteristic of ConCept System is that users can customize their own plug-in connectors. In Desiro ML trains, a single-pole version of CSB plug-in connectors is used for the coaxial cables and a multicontact version assures a reliable connection within the passenger information system.

WeiCoS terminals enable a secure and flexible connection of the control cables. These terminals stand for a very efficient assembly: plug-in connectors are simply plugged onto WeiCoS terminals and the connection is established. Without dismantling the conductor it is then possible to connect and disconnect the connection level. This makes it possible to install complete prefabricated entities in the control stand or in the door control system in next to no time.

A precise item designation with high-definition labeling is enabled by the close-fitting conductor and cable markers of the type VT TM/TMI. These markers are ideally applicable for traffic engineering as they are resistant against harsh environmental conditions. Moreover, they are made of a self-extinguishing material which is free from halogen, cadmium and silicone. For this reason, conductor and cable markers from Weidmüller even defy fire and can minimise the risk of fire spreading through the trains.

Besides the Desiro ML, the most modern high-speed trains in the world like ICE, airport shuttles or metro trains operate with flexible and secure components from Weidmüller.
